Standout field shelters that stand the test of time

A single field shelter was where we started, and 5 years later we think that we have the best blend of design, materials and cost available in the UK.

We design and make all of our shelters from start to finish, and erect them on site ourselves, so we know they are going to last.

So if you are looking for a new field shelter, please get in touch to see how we can help. The price and specification of our standard buildings is shown below, but we are always happy to quote for a custom build.

Why we use field shelters

Learn About

Single and double pent roof field shelters, constructed by Sussex Stables, Summer 2025

At Sussex Stables, we know how important it is to provide livestock, and horses in particular with safe and practical shelter whilst they are out in the field. That’s why field shelters are such a popular choice for equestrian and agricultural use across Sussex and the South East.

Designed to offer year-round protection, a quality field shelter allows animals to take cover from heavy rain, strong winds, or scorching sun while still enjoying the freedom of the paddock.

Unlike permanent stables, mobile field shelters are flexible, cost-effective, and often don’t require planning permission, making them a hassle-free solution for many owners. For more information on planning please see our blog post or this page from South Downs planning department

Field shelters are also invaluable for managing grazing. By being able to easily provide shade and shelter in different paddocks, you can rotate grazing more effectively, prevent overgrazing, and keep fields in good condition.

Whether you need a simple mobile unit or a fully customised shelter with lots of extras, Sussex Stables designs and builds durable, long-lasting timber shelters to meet your needs.

Protect your animals, improve your land management, and invest in their wellbeing with a Sussex Stables field shelter.

What sets us apart?

Find out

There are a lot of companies offering field shelters. Below are a few things that set us apart from our competition.

    Studwork

    We use 4" x 2" (95mm x 47mm) C24 graded softwood for all of our buildings.

    This offers around 35% more strength and rigidity than 3"x2" (70mm x 47mm) and 50% more than 3" x 2" CLS (63 x 38mm)

    Cladding

We use a 32mm thick feather edge cladding on all of our structures, offering greater rigidity than the 11mm or 16mm thick shiplap used by others.

    Kickboards

No ply or OSB here. All of our kickboards are 150x25mm (6" x 1") pressure treated solid boards.
These are far stronger than sheet goods, and if something does happen, they can be individually replaced.

    Roofing

We will never use Onduline, a roof covering that has been proven as not fit for purpose on unsupported roofs.

Instead all of our buildings come with steel roof sheets as standard, with fibre cement also available.

    Rooflights

We include a GRP rooflight in every pitched roof structure.

These clear panels really make a differance in low light conditions, such as feeding during winters afternoons.

    Skids

All of our field shelters come with galvanized steel skids, to all 4 sides, as standard.

These include welded on towing eyes, for extra strength.

    Built for you

All our prices include delivery and erection, all you have to do is show us where to put the field shelter.
