Types of fencing
A Guide To
Choosing the correct type or style of fencing can be a minefield, especially when livestock are involved. Below is a brief guide on the main types we install, which may help make the decision easier for you.
Wire Fencing
Most Used
In recent years the old stock netting has been replaced with equine specific models of fencing. This wire has smaller gaps, to prevent legs being trapped and is typically 1.2m tall to better retain horses.

Can be installed onto UC4 or creosoted machined posts (as shown). Alternatively lots of people are now opting for chestnut posts as a more sustainable and cheaper option.Clippex
Long Lasting
Developed in New Zealand, Clippex involves a metal post system, coupled with hooks that hold the wire in place.

Very long lasting and with a low visual impact it is the perfect option for the less price conscious customer.Sawn Post & Rail
Smart
A very modern, neat looking option. Slightly less durable than wire fencing, post and rail is still used extensivly around arena's and pens.

It is also very good at mapping contours of the ground, so can be used on uneven terrain where wire may leave large gaps underneath.Chestnut post and rail
Attractive
A personal favorite. Chestnut post and rail is traditional Sussex fencing. Less practical than other options it is still used in areas where visual appeal is a top priority, particularly around houses.

I have stock fencing at the moment, should i change it for horse net?
This is a personal decision. Horse specific fencing is safer, and we will not install new stock fencing for horse paddocks but it is a large expense to change all your fencing, and only you can decide if it is worth it. For commercial yards it is slightly different, and it is worth checking with your insurer as some will not cover injuries caused by stock fencing.
